With turnout gear just behind their feet, three junior firefighters were dressed in formal uniforms. They were from the Lincolnway Fire Company stood nearly motionless behind a fire truck as a judge inspected the rig.

Roy Gentzler, first assistant chief with the West Manchester Township Fire Department, said countless man hours went into preparing the truck for the 96th annual York County Firefighters Convention, held Saturday at John C. Rudy County Park in East Manchester Township.

The roof of the truck's cab, which is about double the size of a roof found on a full-sized sedan, took the junior firefighters roughly four hours to clean and wax.

But the hard work is worth it, Gentzler said. The truck, which responded to more than

700 calls in 2007, has won first place in its category for three years.

"We keep up with it pretty well," he said.

In years past, a firefighters parade was held as part of the convention. But this year, organizers opted to hold a "shine and show" instead.

Chief Joseph A. Stevens of Union Fire Company No.1 in Manchester said the new format allows the public to see the equipment up close and gives people a chance to speak with the firefighters.

Stevens said more than 70 fire trucks from York, Lancaster, Cumberland and Dauphin counties were on display for the event, less than the usual 100 entrants that participated in the parade. He estimated more than 300 people had turned out to see the trucks.

The Union Fire Company, which is celebrating its 150th year of service, hosted the event. Stevens said the department choose to do the shine and show to mix things up. Gentzler said he likes the new format better than riding in a parade because he gets a chance to speak with people curious about what firefighters do and the equipment they use.

"That's one thing I really enjoy," he said.

Jim Gibney of Fawn Grove had his 1973 fire truck, built by Mack Trucks, on display.
